Tips and care instructions
Well cared for for a long life
Well-maintained tools last longer and ensure the best possible functionality. With our care tips, you can keep your spade in top condition.
You should basically observe the following points:
1. Never leave the spade in the ground for a long time! The damp soil attacks the steel over time and causes it to rust more quickly. The weather also affects the handle and thus promotes weathering of the wood.
2. Do not store your spade in heated rooms!
The wood of the handle needs moisture to maintain its flexibility. Warm, dry air draws water out of the wood fiber and leads to increased susceptibility to breakage. The best place to keep the spade is in a shed or garden house where it is exposed to natural humidity.
Maintaining spades
After use:
Remove soil and dirt from the spade blade with a brush and water. Then place the spade against the wall with the blade facing upwards. This will allow the remaining water to flow down the handle and be absorbed by the wood. This will benefit the flexibility of the wood fiber and prevent it from getting into the handle holder where it would encourage rust.
Storage in winter:
At the end of the season, we recommend lightly oiling the spade blade after cleaning. Store the spade in the garden shed and not in heated rooms.
At the start of the season:
Before the spade is used again after the winter, we recommend moisturizing the handle. The air is particularly dry on colder winter days and draws moisture from the handle. To do this, briefly pour water over the lower third of the handle a few days beforehand. You can also wrap the handle in a damp cloth. However, you should never soak the handle in water.
